The course title is The National Certificate of Tenant Participation and Neighbourhood Renewal. It is a unique and exciting course run in partnership between, Kirklees Federation of Tenants & Residents Association, Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and Huddersfield Technical College.
The course is delivered at Huddersfield Technical College together with a variety of site visits and is aimed at tenants, community activists and housing professionals. This is a one day per week, one year course promoting tenant participation in social housing running from 16th September 2008 to June 09. It is a level 3 Chartered Institute of Housing Qualification.
Students will look in-depth at the history of social housing and the development of the tenant movement. Sessions also cover community action planning, tenant participation in housing management and Neighbourhood Renewal. There will be regular assignments set for students but there will be plenty of opportunity to develop skills in research, evaluation, communication and planning. There is a high level of class and tutor support and almost all students have gone on to bigger and better things.
After completing the course Barbara Robinson, Tenant said “I found the course absolutely brilliant. The tutors are so helpful. At 56 I didn’t expect to do so well, I am sad it is over.”
Barbara Brotherton, housing officer said “It really challenged my thinking – working with tenants on assignments and looking at ‘housing’ from totally different angles. I enjoyed every second and learnt so much.”
Richard Bastow, Tenant said “It took me a while to get into the course, the lectures were very interesting but at the beginning it was a mystery and the assignments were daunting. You get a lot of support from the tutors. In the end I really enjoyed it and I am a different person.”
